Excavations near Tatul confirm the hypothesis that the sanctuary belonged to Orpheus.
Findings from the archaeological excavations at Tatul confirm the hypothesis that the sanctuary belonged to Orpheus. It was said by Prof Nikolay Ovcharov, on the round table discussion, held in Smolyan on "The Magic of Orpheus, folklore and young people." The discussion took place during the 14's Orpheus international youth folk festivals. With certainty, can be sad that this is indeed hereon i.e. sanctuary of the divinized after the death of the Thracian king, great and respected in the Rhodope, said Prof Ovcharov. He suggested that the sanctuary near Tatul might be devoted to the legendary Orpheus. We are talking about a very rare tradition, described by ancient sources, according to whom the Thracian king who was not buried under the embanked tumulus, but on the top of a mountain in a cave or a column, and even after his death he remains a mediator between gods and humans, the archaeologist explains the hypothesis. According to him, this ritual has been described for the Thracian kings Orpheus and Rhesus. Different unknown matter is whether Orpheus was a real genuine person, there is a hypothesis that he might be one assembled image, said prof.Ovcharov.
