A late-Antiquity tomb will be elevated to the ground level of Moskovska street with a replica – Stroitel newspaper, Nov 9, 2018.2018
Unique murals with early-Christian frescos will be
copied on an arch with glass cover
The ideas for exhibiting the
artefact, as well as the findings of archeologists and restoration specialists,
were presented at the Sofia History Museum by Mr. Peev, dipl. Architect and
chief designer of the conservation, restoration and socialization of the
ancient tomb, by Yunian Meshekov, leader of the archeological research group,
and Todor Chobanov, PhD – Sofia’s vice-mayor for Culture, education, sports and
dependencies prevention.
A replica will show to Sofia’s
inhabitants and its visitors the contents of the ancient tomb (5th-6th
century A.D.) at Moskovska street. After the end of the archeological study and
under the recommendation of the Ministry of Culture, EKSA’s team, led by
Konstantin Peev, dipl. Architect, has created a preliminary design for the
tomb’s conservation, restoration and socialization. Arch. Peev presented the
design for exhibiting the tomb at the Sofia History Museum.
The project designers propose the
creation of a replica on top of the original tomb. This is a tested method for
exhibiting ancient vestiges. For example, the Kazanlak tomb, a listed
historical building of global significance, is also exhibited through a copy.
Within the preliminary design the team has proposed the inclusion of a glass
window, looking out towards Saint Sofia church, through which one can see the
original façade of the site – its entrance, hid by two big stones – but won’t
be able to observe the murals inside. This is why a replica of the frescos will
be created, using a painting technique similar to those of Antiquity, and will
be positioned outside, on an arch, which will be built on top of the tomb.
The conservation process should start next
spring. The total value of the planned works should be between BGN 30,000 and
50,000, depending on the selected materials and implementation activities.
An Arch will be Built over an Ancient Tomb in front of the Sofia Town Hall – Telegraf newspaper, Oct 19, 2018.2018
The artefact remains closed, its
scriptures will be recreated on top of it.
The ancient tomb from the early Christian period (5th-6th
c. A.D.) has been uncovered this summer during renovation works at
Moskovskastreet, right across from the Sofia Town Hall. This is yet another
tomb from the East-side necropolis of the ancient town of Serdika. Inside the
tomb there are impressive bright-colored murals depicting two crosses as well
as floral motives. Mr. Peev, dipl. Architect and CEO of EKSA, presented the
design for preserving and exhibiting the tomb. The murals will be recreated and
shown for the public at the ground level. The pavement of the sidewalk right
above the tomb will be painted in a different color and its shape will resemble
that of the tomb underneath. There will also be an arch built on top, with a
color appropriately corresponding to the hues of the bricks of Saint Sofia
church, located right next to the tomb.
