BURGAS MUNICIPALITY

The monastery complex on the island "St. Anastasia"
The monastery complex on the island "St. Anastasia" is located in the southeastern part of the Burgas Bay. In November 2013, Burgas Municipality completed restoration and conservation of historical and cultural values of the island under a project funded by OPRD.
The monastery complex on the island "St. Anastasia" is located in the southeastern part of the Burgas Bay, approximately 6 km away from Burgas.
With the declaration in State Gazette pc. 39 in 1973 the monastery complex "St. Anastasia" was given the status of a cultural monument of national importance. In November 2013, Burgas Municipality completed restoration and conservation of historical and cultural values of the island under a project funded by OPRD. Having a dramatic ancient history, island St. Anastasia is now more important than ever. Here is the only island monastery in Bulgaria, named after the island - "St. Anastasia”. Monastery complex from the time of the Second Bulgarian Empire, located on an island and preserved to this day is rare not only in our country.
Urbanization composition embodies the basic features of a closed courtyard medieval ensemble. The complex covers an area of approximately 1650 m2. In the central area of the monastery are preserved temple built in various periods, monastic convent on two levels, today a museum, building on two levels, north of the church, restored as a "guest house", today's one-story restaurant - restored from the ruins of monastery "cookhouse", which was on two levels. On the island are located also several service buildings.
The object is extremely challenging and unique, not only because its undeniable importance and location, but also in its scope. Apart from the activities of CRE and socialization of the monastery complex, it was done development and landscaping, view sites are distinct, it is provided access to people with disabilities, its done a comprehensive rehabilitation of the pier, which includes strengthening its construction through piles in steel pipes, it was also built a local wastewater treatment plant and replaced underwater cable that supplies the island with electricity.
The implementation of the construction works is based on the high quality natural materials that are in harmony with the surrounding environment. All facade cladding and windows of the buildings are made with oak material, which is characterized by its excellent technical and aesthetic qualities. The reconstruction again is based on the harmonic combinations, as the main paths are reused much of the available stone, and where it was necessary it is complemented by similar in nature to the existing ones. The new structures, such as the open stage and physician’s place are marked by using a different type of stone - travertine. The stage is built of massive stone blocks and the seats are of oak wood. Physician’s place is dug into the ground and is covered with grass roof, where are grown herbs for teas and infusions in authentic monastic recipes. Guard rails are made of stainless steel and marker parapets combine wooden parts and marine rope.
To provide the necessary amounts of water and being environmental friendly it is used an original approach. With the restoration of the facility for the collection of rainwater in an existing reservoir, dug into the rock, are covered the needs of water volumes required for fire installation. For watering the lawns it is used purified water from LWWTP, that collects the water in tanks below ground level and there is no swelling of wastewater into the sea.
Facilities and services: After the massive reconstruction, buildings are rising into life and can now enjoy the following amenities and services:
Restaurant - traditional seafood dishes by authentic recipes. Physician’s place - original teas and infusions made from herbs grown on the island. Large monastery building - interactive museum, gift shop, multi-purpose room and accommodation. Small monastery building - accommodation in spacious rooms with private bathrooms and a cozy living room.
In developing this project has been taken an innovative approach in which originality and high cultural and historical value of St. Anastasia is interpreted in the context of modern and dynamic urban environment.
